Shaping the future: PRESENCE
Global: PRESENCE is featured in the latest issue of IUCN’s World Conservation Magazine. The special 60th anniversary issue features a section titled ‘Shaping the future’ which showcases 60 things that are changing conservation. IUCN asked its global network of experts about the issues and approaches that will influence the environment in the next 60 years. In the article titled, ‘Making their presence felt’, IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management member Dr. Rudolf de Groot says, “In adopting the ecosystem approach, PRESENCE is adapting and responding to stakeholder preferences; implementer’s needs and constraints, and improved scientific understanding.” The piece also highlights how North-South collaboration is catalysing efforts to reverse the ecological degradation of one of South Africa’s ecological jewels – the subtropical thicket biome. The article acknolwedges EarthCollective’s efforts in initiating PRESENCE to help reverse the transformation of ecosystems which compromises biodiversity and ultimately the well-being of local cmmunities.
