Education with EarthCollective

EarthCollective adopts a relatively unique approach towards improving the relationships between nature and human well being . Members understand that utilising tools that facilitate a long-term change of perception is at the heart of any effective education programme. Perception is most effectively influenced through direct experience coupled with different ways of learning and ‘knowing’ which empower the collective through the individual.

Outcomes of such a process enable young professionals to foster a ‘can-do’ mindset in their chosen field. They are also equipped with stronger leadership skills and insights which allow for inter-personal growth. This allows individuals to be open to sharing their personal ambitions for sustainability with others. And, finally, feeling empowered to act in becoming the change they wish to see in the world.

Members of EarthCollective have – or are – engaged with the following education-related programmes:

  • On-ground supervisors for students and interns from around the world carrying out applied research through the PRESENCE network and related initiatives aimed at guiding research-implementation for the restoration of living landscapes in South Africa.
  • Co-instructors for courses linked to ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation. For example, EarthCollective members are engaged in the Wildlands Studies course targeted at students from the United States who wish to broaden their knowledge, practical experience and understanding of challenges and solution-oriented approaches/techniques for conserving and restoring biodiversity and livelihoods in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
  • Strategists in designing guidelines and information aimed at raising awareness and changing perception and behaviour specific societal issues. For example, developing best-practice guidelines for recreational fishers active on Aboriginal land in northern Australia.
  • Strategists in designing course curricula for experiential environmental education and transdisciplinary learning for sustainability
